The Moonballer is the first ever book written by an Indian female tennis player. From a modest background with no sponsors and a self-trained father as her tennis coach, she became India’s no. 1 at 14 years of age. She was the first Indian woman ever to win a round at a Grand Slam (Australian Open 1998) and became the first mother to play for India at the 2010 Commonwealth and Asian Games. In the competitive world of pro-tennis where money , fame /glamour come easily to the top 10-20, there are countless others who struggle as journey men/women and certainly many more who fall by the wayside. This book is the story - rather an abridged auto-bio of one such journey woman - Nirupama Sanjeev. She was India’s first woman tennis pro. Although she may not be a household name in tennis , her story deserves to be told especially since she represents numerous unheard-of Indian athletes in the cricket crazy nation of India. For this lot there is virtually no professional sporting infrastructure or support system that nurtures their talent. One needs to simply look at India's Olympic medals tally to understand this grave problem.Hers is a fascinating story of a girl from a humble background in South India trying to make it in the pro circuit in the 90s driven by the pure passion for the sport - supported by her family and a few good Samaritans There are many accounts in the book that talk of her struggles especially of the financial kind (due to lack of sponsors) by outlining the detailed logistics involved in pro-tennis and her thought process in tackling them. After all tennis is an expensive individual sport in terms of equipment, courts, travel, hotel etc and nothing can be taken for granted!
Without sounding bitter the book highlights the unprofessional mess of how tennis is run in India in general and attitudinal apathy towards sportswomen in particular. Indeed with the right support structure Nirupama - and others would have gone far. There is ample space devoted in the book towards her second stint in tennis post retirement in her 30's to represent India in the 2010 Commonwealth games. It is rare for tennis pros to comeback to represent their country post retirement- and compete well with the younger lot.
The book is a quick read. You will find many tennis anecdotes but you will be disappointed if you are looking for tennis tips to improve your game. It is honest and aims to highlight a struggle against the odds- hence the title "Moonballer". The writing style will make the book resonate more with an Indian audience even though the author makes an effort to expound on some cultural aspects for non-Indian readers. My only gripe is that author sometimes goes to great lengths to chronicle her personal life events like her wedding, childbirth in detail. She could have instead devoted more space in the book on the mental/tactical aspects of the game, her insights on the modern game, lessons learnt from behind the microphone as a commentator . But this is understandable- after all the book is indeed from the heart.

I am inspired by Niru's story. Niru's close relationship with her family and her natural talent gave her the foundation and confidence to reach incredible heights of her tennis career. Niru faced issues of sexism and racism during her tennis career. She was more often than not the underdog in many of her matches. Her determination to succeed no matter the circumstance, her ever-present high personal values combined with her talent for the game ensured her success. This is a story to share with your athletic teenage daughters and granddaughters. Niru succeeded without a hint of inpropriety. All too often in today's culture, a girl is swayed by an overly sexual society. Niru's story had none of that, which to me, was so important. This is a story of the average girl from an average family succeeding to the top level of tennis in difficult circumstances the old fashioned way - she earned it!
When I went to India in October I bought the book as my reading companion for my journey from Chennai to San Francisco. I could not put this book down and finished it by the time I reached Hong Kong! I follow Tennis very religiously. But this book is not only about Tennis. Nirupama is such an inspiration to teenagers. Anyone who has got a teenager must read this book and also ask their teenagers to read it. I have already requested my daughter to read this book during her winter break.
This books takes you through the 80s and 90s of Tamil Nadu, India and kindled a lot of my own childhood memories. The vivid description of her experience in living alone as a 17 year old in Europe is amazing. Her simple and easy going style of narrating the events almost makes you forget that you are reading an autobiography.
I knew about Nirupama during her prime when she was playing Tennis but only as someone you read about in the news. After reading this book I have developed a new respect not only for her but for the thousands of youngsters who go through the grueling Tennis circuit as teenagers.

Very interesting story about a young woman's struggle to become India's first female tennis player to win a match in a Major (Grand Slam) tournament. If you like tennis, this is very good reading -)
As a youngster growing up in Coimbatore in 90s,i frequently read this name Nirupama in newspapers and channels but never comprehended the journey she had to take to become the first women's professional tennis player from India..Sad part was the lack of support she got from the indian tennis association..Must read for any indian tennis lover
As the biography of the first Indian Professional Woman Tennis Player, this book made a fascinating reading as the author had to
traverse an unknown path and had to face many cultural, technical(raising the game to the next level) and financial challenges.
Author's reminiscences about staying in Europe alone for 2 years as a 18 year old and grinding it out as a professional tennis player were very interesting. Also her observations about the WTA tour and conduct of the various Grand Slams(preferential treatment to seeded players at Wimbledon at the cost of unseeded players/qualifiers etc.) were interesting.
I was very happy to add this book to my collection of Tennis books.
